Captain Kirk is presiding over the marriage of Angela Martine and Robert Tomlinson aboard the <I>Enterprise</I> when the service is rudely interrupted: a Romulan warbird has attacked and destroyed Outpost 4, which guards the Neutral Zone lying between Federation and Romulan space. When Kirk learns that the Romulan vessel has also destroyed three other outposts and is now heading home at full speed, he orders his ship to pursue the Romulans. However, the warbird is protected by a cloaking device that renders it invisible to detectors, but which also prevents the Romulans from using their weapons or visual aids; for this reason, the Romulan Commander is unsure whether his instruments have detected a Federation ship behind them, or just a harmless space echo. Chasing the Romulan spaceship, the <I>Enterprise</I> crew is able to intercept a visual signal from the enemy bridge; they catch a glimpse of the previously-unseen Romulans, who look very similar to Vulcans, but this only causes Lieutenant Andrew Stiles, whose family fought in the Romulan wars, to instantly become suspicious of Lieutenant Commander Spock. The tense situation escalates, and tempers flare on the bridge of the <I>Enterprise</I>; meanwhile, unable to shake off his pursuers, the Romulan Commander decides to turn and fight. After a fierce battle between the two ships ensues, both vessels suffer heavy damage, the <I>Enterprise</I>'s phaser banks emitttinga poisonous gas that incapacitates both Stiles and Tomlinson. The captains of the two crippled vessels prepare for a desperate battle - but who will emerge the victor..?
